Plasma Cutters in Your Workshop

May 4th, 2010

If you do a lot of body panel work or metal art in your work shop then a plasma cutter is ideal for you. One of the reasons is that plasma cutting does not require you to store or use explosive or volatile gasses. Unlike Oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting uses pressurized, inert gasses, such as air, for cutting.

You may have been reluctant to buy a plasma cutter in the past because of their imprecision; the imprecision was as a result of the large plasma jet. Advances in technology and manufacturing have allowed engineers to create a plasma cutter torch that produces a more focused plasma jet while also increasing the speed of the plasma stream. Also, because of the focus and increased speed, plasma cutters now use less power than ever before. Plasma cutting imprecision can also come from an unsteady hand, which can be avoided by using an automated plasma cutting set up that is computer controlled.

Another reason you may have avoided buying a plasma cutter for your work shop is the fact that they can be a little rough on the pocket book. Again, modern manufacturing comes to the rescue, you can now buy a plasma cutter for less than $1,000. A Firepower 12 amp unit that comes with its own air compressor will run you $998.75. Not much under $1,000, but a little under is still better than a little over. This unit would fit snugly into your work shop and let you burn off paint or cut through eight of an inch thick sheets of steel.
